How to Set SMART Goals Simply What are SMART goals anyway? Aren't all goals smart just because it is good to have goals? You are right, PEOPLE WITH GOALS CREATE SUCCESS, however with the right tools you can create fabulous goals that will deliver your success simply. Typically SMART goals follow the formula below: Specifc Measurable Actionable Realistic Timeline That means that each goal is very specific. You can assess whether or not you have achieved it - measure your success at the end of it. The goal is actionable, meaning you can take appropriate action to achieve it. It is realistic (I wouldn't pay too much attention to this though - more on this later!), and it has a timeline as to when it will be achieved. What would a SMART goal look like? GOAL: Travel to Japan in 2010 with a friend. This goal is specific, it has a timeline, it is actionable, it is realistic and I can certainly tell if I have achieved it or not, so it is measurable. I believe we are all capable of soaring to new heights and therefore I am not a firm believer in making goals realistic. We are often critical of ourselves and doubt our abilities anyway, so to say that each goal should be realistic, might be to put a dampner on your dreams. If you are just getting started in the goals caper then perhaps it is best to start with some realistic ones, just so you can feel that you are successful with goal achievement. However, for those of you who really want to live their dream life, then you need be creative with your goals, challenge yourself to soar and don't place 'realistic' restrictions on your goals. I mentioned in my Art of Designing Your Dream Life article, that what you can dream of you can achieve. Enjoy!
